View Article  New York Times forum discussion on Space Shuttle safety, resumed after a few years.

    http://forums.nytimes.com/top/opinion/readersopinions/forums/science/spaceandthecosmos/index.html?offset=19614&fid=.f2e4e3c/19614

Well well, here we are discussing the space shuttle again.

Remember all the solutions discussed here after the accident?

One was followed, careful photographic examination of the launch to catch any problems.

But apparently the other suggestion to add fiber to the foam (kevlar of course would be the choice), was not followed.

In fact this was the case!

Among other things, it improved the training processes for applying foam by hand. At the Michoud tank assembly plant in Louisiana, an observer monitors every worker spraying foam - "for every sprayer there's a watcher, a second pair of eyes," said June Malone, a NASA spokeswoman.

But the tank that flew with the Discovery last week was made before the new procedures went into effect, and NASA stopped short of requiring that the ramps be redone, said a spokesman, Martin J. Jensen.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/31/science/space/3 [...]

So NO improvement at all was done to the foam!! They flew with tank insulation applied before the new procedure "... improved the training processes for applying foam by hand", identical to the foam that killed the previous crew? Why?

"Foam really is complicated," said Douglas D. Osheroff, a professor of physics at Stanford and a member of the board that investigated the Columbia accident. "Once you go supersonic, the top surface melts, the bottom surface is brittle as all hell because it's very cold, and you've got everything in between."

Although the material could be made less fragile by adding fibers to the foam, he noted, "that adds weight" to the shuttle.

So the weight argument trumped the safety issue? Why not save weight in other areas?

    And finally this.

"I think they tried to find the solution within their own ranks, using what they're already familiar with," he said. "They should have looked at more options," perhaps including different formulations of foam that might be more flexible. But that would go against a fundamental tenet of engineering. As Michael D. Griffin, NASA's new administrator and an engineer himself, said Friday, engineers believe "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

"We debated and discussed whether the PAL ramp was broke" in the months that followed the Columbia disaster, Dr. Griffin continued. "The conclusion we came to was the wrong one, but the conclusion we came to after considerable study was that it was better to fly as is."

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." But the ramp was not "broke", the foam coating was "broke".

And it was not fixed, or tested until failure as is the rule with aircraft engineering.

The people who made the decision not to fix the foam and test it need to be retired with extreme prejudice. And replaced by folks like this..

A NASA engineer who works on tank safety issues said other areas of foam shedding from the Discovery's tank were even more troubling than the PAL ramp loss - especially a divot that popped from the vicinity of the left-hand bipod strut, the spot that shed the foam that brought down Columbia.

"We worked the hell out of that," said the engineer, who was given anonymity because he said disclosure of his name would jeopardize his career. The loss of foam from that spot after so much work to correct the problem, he went on, proves that the problem is still far more complex than NASA understands.

Another potential whistleblower that had to remain silent to protect his career. When will reform take hold? Will it ever?

This is the same story at every level of our culture. Remain silent or face mob justice.

Evidently this is so.  I received this email from moderators at Gristmill, the lightly visited blog of Grist online magazine.

    amazingdrx,

We have received several complaints about your participation in the comment boards on Gristmill, both from other readers and from guest authors. Though the complaints cover a variety of subjects, the main two are as follows:

    1. You frequently issue ad hominem attacks, questioning the motives and character of other readers and authors.
    2. You  simply comment too much. Readers have complained that you "overwhelm" the site and "crowd out other voices." They have said that they believe the frequency of your comments makes other readers hesitant to comment and reduces the diversity and vibrancy of the comment boards.

Please take steps to address these behaviors.

This will be your only warning. If we receive further complaints, we will be forced to ban you from further participation on Gristmill.

    --Gristmill admin.

I would think they would be grateful for ANY participation given that most topics introduced engender no comments from anyone?  Maybe this venue is best left to the "authors" to comment on each other's entries?  Hehehey.

Mob rule is the rule on the internet given this brand of moderation.  I have seen it for years.

Political correctness must be followed to remain popular with very sensitive netizens whose sudden power goes to their heads.

-Requires the federal government to purchase 10% of its electricity from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power, or other zero-emission sources by 2015.

-Require that when the federal government purchases vehicles, 10% of those vehicles must be hybrids or vehicles that otherwise achieve 40 miles per gallon.

-Provides interest free loans so that institutions of higher learning, municipalities and local governments can purchase hybrids or vehicles that can get 40 miles to the gallon.

-Require the government to, where it is economically feasible, purchase biodiesel, 85% ethanol blended gasoline, or 10% ethanol blended gasoline.

    - The bill will also provide tax credits in order to incentivize consumer purchase of and industry production of hybrids, advanced diesels, alternative fuel and hydrogen vehicles.

    ____________________________________________

Since 40 mpg vehicles are already available for purchase right now and this plan propses only 10% government purchase by 2015, it is very hard to see how this would free the US from dependence on foreign oil.

Many corporate energy industry experts and government officials already believe nuclear power to be zero emmission, and this plan only requires 10% purchase of zero emmission energy by 2015.

It just does not seem to be an effective plan for eliminating reliance on foreign oil and reducing greenhouse gas emmissions to halt global climate disaster.

Dkos green tag sales maybe more effective as a direct effort here, then invest those funds raised in a wind facilities built by Clipper Wind.  The dividends from that investment would go back into the account to buy even more wind capacity.

A contract could be negotiated with Clipper to sell a continuously growing portion of  wind farm capacity to match the green tag sales.  Clipper could agree to give Dkos a discount price based upon the advertising value of the project to Clipper.

A green tag account would acumulate the cash, then a contract would be negotiated that would keep the level of power production growing along with the green tag account.  So that as each green tag  has it's value fullfilled by clean generation of 1000 kilowatt hours of power by a Clipper Wind farm the person that bought the green tag would be notified.

One green tag offsets the carbon and other emmissions from 1000 kilowarr hours of electric power generation.  Ideally everyone would purchase enough green tags to offset the amount of electricity from fossil fuel and nuclear sources that they use.

    No ideas huh?
Read the latest National Geographic on energy.

National geographic has a flawed comparison of wind versus nuclear power that claims with 1.5 megawatt machines (not sure how they rated them) it would take about 1700 to equal a 1000 megawatt nuclear reactor that would take up 1/2 square mile.  These wind machines would  take up about 2.52 square miles.

600 of these 2.52 square mile wind installations would equal the present US generating capacity under these vastly underestimated power calculations per area for wind.

That's about 1550 square miles.  Out of a million square miles of the great plains.  Less than 1/5th of one percent of the land area, optimum wind locations out on the plains away from anyone who would reasonably be bothered by them is certainly possible.

With my example of 40 huge 1000 foot wind machines replacing a nuke and each machine taking up only about 5000 square feet at the base. Cattle, wildlife, or crops occupying all but a small footprint under the machine, then the actual land area used is under 5 square miles total.

5 square miles out of a million on the great plains... compared to 300 square miles for the nuclear power equivalent.

The 5 square miles for wind can be returned to prairie once the wind machines have produced power for a few decades and become obsolete.  They will even produce the clean energy needed to recycle them!

The 300 square miles of nuclear reactor space will be dangerous for thousands of years, as well as the 100s of square miles needed for mining, refining fuel, storing and processing waste, the thousands of square miles contaminated by  leaking radiocativity spreading exponentially into lake, groundwater, rivers, oceans....

If you continue to denigrate real solutions, the neoconman administration will go ahead with "clean" coal and nuclear power, while touting the pie-in-the-sky nuclear/hydrogen fuel economy.  And continuing continuous war for oily empire and political manipulation.

But that is alright with you?  Correct?

    Not with wind.
"Its use therfore results in a net increase in the energy released into the global system."

Yep, like bringing the sun down to earth.  Either fusion or fission.  Even solar captures some extra sunlight normally re-radiated into space.

Only wind uses solar energy already here.

But cut those greenhouse gas emmisssions with wind or solar and the balance is restored.

"the risk is preferable to the disaster looming ahead"

That is the false dilemna fallacy.  That the looming emergency makes any risk from nuclear aok.

If there were only two alternatives then and only then would that be true.

But conservation through redesign of all human energy uses and wind, wave, ocean current, solar cogeneration can stop the looming climate disaster.   Along with reproductive rights for women, which will solve the overpopulation problem at the base of the rapid rise of energy needs.

"If the lure of big science and big profits to big corporations is what spurs rapid development and adoption, count me on board."

There is plenty of that profitable "lure" in these alternatives, but it won't happen unless government of we the people gets the agenda of these corporate "citizens" back in line with reality.

Now corporatism is running government from within, that needs to change.  Forget nuclear power and the hydrogen fueled economy, it is pie-in-the-sky corporatist propaganda.

Corporations are not citizens.  They do not have rights in the same sense that humans do.  The humans who run and work for corporations have rights.  Wake up and smell the neo-libertarian propaganda, before it's too late.

Organic could be less expensive too.

I'm thinking electric powered farm machinery that aids labor intensive farming.

Riding carts, with shade and dust protection, between the rows pulling water and liquid organic fertilizer, or mulch, that is programmed to weed and feed by itself by the operator, who rides along ocasionally correcting it.

The computer in the cart "learns" where the plants are, where to water and weed.

Water and fertilizer right to the plants, weeds sucked up and shredded into mulch.  Bugs eating too much of the plants sucked into the mulch too.

Harvesting all done from a comfortable situation too.  This would make labor intensive organic farming actually enjoyable.  A great job.

Planting as well, seedlings and seeds all placed by the robot arms, controllable by hand but programmable.

This would raise productivity and lower costs without chemicals or genetic engineering.  Good old humans who love gardening helped out with better tools, computers and robot arms.

    Here:

    http://www.worldchanging.com/cgi-bin/blather.cgi?entry_id=3168

You guys are overlooking the important part of this, overpowering solar energy focused on a water cooled PV cell works.

Maybe not as well as it could given a simpler design, but still this proves you can overpower a solar cell.

Now how about a rotary mirror system that allows the solar cells to produce synchronous AC current for the grid. This could provide greater efficiency from the cells as it would temper the heating effect.

The whole floating thing is kind of strange, and the use of a lense means it can only work in direct sunlight, not diffuse cloud light.

Plus the heat from the cooling water is not collected.

Combined with algae growth systems that use the excess photosynthetic light, and provide rapid evaporation to distill water and collect heat, and biofuel systems to process the algae using solar power, this system could produce maximum hours of peak electric power from the expensive part of solar power, the PV cells, while providing waste water recycling, biofuel (hydrogen, biodiesel, ethanol, and methane), organic fertilizer, and heat for either heating or cooling (adsorption cycle)buildings.

Solar cogeneration, the next wave in renewable energy, hang 10!

They are a few generations ahead of GE.  US manufactured wind power!

If you want facts and figures that disprove the ultilty of wind go find them yourself eric.  I'm only seeing good news on this front.

There are plenty of sites that feature bad news about renewables, google and enjoy!  But don't expect much agreement with talking point based propaganda from anywhere but the fairthbased corporatist oil war fans.

    You will note...
That the contract signed with the Iowa utility by clipper was based on supplying a given number of kwh per year.

Just as I said, that is the only way to really compare and rate energy output from various sources and calculate cost.

Clipper puts it's money on the line signing on to guarantee that power output.

Your facts and figures obscure this kind of analysis.  To paraphrase  Joe Friday ..Just the facts maam (er..eric).

    No clue...
"..an installed capacity of about 4,480 MW "

No clue or link to find a clue to what that figure is based upon?

Rating wind generators is usually done at a certain wind speed, sometimes this windspeed corresponds to the average wind speed where it is installed, but often it is not.

An arbitrary figure is usually chosen by the manufacturer.

If we rate a given wind machine at 10 mph  wind speed, then the rating at twice that speed would be 8 times greater.  That leaves a lot of leeway in your statistics.

So much so that they are meaningless.  Stick to the standard that utility companies estimate costs, and sign contracts on.  Kwh per year.

    As far as your extrapolation?

    http://www.gepower.com/prod_serv/products/wind_turbines/en/36mw/36mw_data.htm

You will see from the chart headed "annual energy yield: 3.6 megawatt" that at 10 m/s average wind speed the 341 foot diamter machine produces 15 million kwh of power per year.

There are 8760 hours per year, a 20 megawatt continuouisly operating power source would produce 175,200,000 kwh per year.

Aproximately 12 times the 3.6 megawatt GE machine.

A wind machine 3 times the diameter of this one will produce 9 times the power.  The hub of the larger machine is twice as high as the GE machine.

Windspeed rises with height above the ground.  And since the output of a wind machine varies as the cube of the windspeed, only a small percentage rise in wind speed of 14% due to the added tower height will push the output up to the 12 times needed to equal the number of kwh per year yielded by a 20megawatt continuous source.

Kwh per year breaks through all the flawed extrapolation trying to compare wind to other sources.

    More reply:

    You dispute GE's figures?

That is the performance that GE promises it's customers, they could be sued if they fall short.

I'm betting they are fairly conservative and that even more kwh per year are typical.  Those are conservative estimates based on real world results.

My extrapolation is based on the basic physics behind wind power engineering.

Double the diameter of the blades, you quadruple the area of the wind operating on the blades, and the power produced.  Triple the diameter and you get 9 times the power.

Double the wind speed and you get 8 times the power from the same sized wind machine.  Power rises as the cube of wind speed.

The example of continuous generation merely counts the amount of power, in kwh, that a 20 megwatt power source would produce if it ran for one year (8760 hours).

It is not meant to imply that wind or any other source is continuous, fossil and nukes are rated at 80% continuous operation.  The general figure for wind is 40% of fossil powered generation.  But these figures are misleading, only comparing kwh per year is straighforward.

It is a clear way to determine how large a wind machine would have to be to equal a fossil or nuclear power source.  And the GE machine is rated in kwh per year produced at a given average annual wind speed.

The best cost estimates per kwh are also based upon how many kwh are generated over time.

And the current wind power cost of 2 cents per kwh takes into account all inefficiencies due to wind variability and load conditions on the grid.

I think now that large wind systems are connecting to large power grids the variability problems are already being smoothed out.

The use of large energy storage systems based on superconducting technology are very promising.  Electrical energy rides artound these rings with virtually no resistance, it is like an electrical flywheel where the electrons are the only things moving.

Power is added or removed by electromagnetic induction.  Added when the sun shines and wind blows strong, and put back into the grid when wind is light, the sun is down, and demand rises.

A nuclear 1000 megwatt reactor.....at 80% operational time would be equivalent to an 800megawatt continuous (theoretical)source.

My 20 megawatt continuous equivalent rated wind machine example would take 40 installations to equal that one 1000 megawatt nuclear reactor.

All the nonsense is thus removed from calculating equivalent generating capacities for wind, solar, nukes, fossil...

The present generating capacity of the US is aproximately 600,000 megawatts.  With most of it rated at around 80% operation time.

This is a promising development that has been overlooked by the debate on reviving nuclear power.

It uses a particle accelerator to make even radioactive waste fuel for a sub-critical reactor.  Sub-critical means that the reactor simply shuts down without the energy fed into it by the particle accelerator, theoretically making it safe from melrdown, with the sadded benefit of being able to use radioactive waste as fuel.

And rendering that waste non-radioactive after a period within the reactor.  Eureka the solution to rad waste?

Well yes it might be, but of course the cost of the electricity produced would be many times that of the present (and still falling) cost of wind electricity.  But why not build one of these ar Yucca Moutain or at another centrally located site to get rid of the waste we already are burdened with?

If this test project is successful it seems to be a solution to the waste problem that will be much cheaper and safer than storing it all in those open used fuel rod storage pools.

Throw the nuclear industry a bone and get out of the waste problem, but don't allow anymore uneconomic, dangerous  waste producing reactors to be built.  I think that's a solution we could all live with.

    http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2005/7/16/22229/1604#1

Were there no intervention in the situation the population would stabilize at the carrying rate of the local environment.  Desertification from deforestation and climate change would leave the local area suitable only for desert nomads and the sparse vegetation they survive on.

So why all this intervention?  Oil and mineral wealth under the local area.

Those who exploit it need to maintain a friendly dictatorship to facilitate the extraction of that wealth.  Starving, desperate people interfere with that business.

They are driven off or massacred by the oil industry friendly dictatorship, onto land already occupied by other groups of starving, desperate people.  This creates further devestation as the horsemen of the apocalypse are then in charge.

The money to buy those "apples" ought to be obtained by taxing the companies that profit from the oil extraction, instead any money from that source goes to support the dictatorship, that buys the guns, that hires the thugs, to drive off and massacre the people.

And if that money were only used to buy sustenance from others, then eventually when that oil runs out, a large population supported by that money from the oil will once again be desperate and starving.

If that money is used to educate the local population and establish businesses that produce products that can bring in the money to sustain it, then it will survive the end of subsidy from oil extraction.  If reproductive rights for women are part of the education, then the population will stabilize without the horsemen's help.

A state that is solely supported  upon oil revenues that would be a benevolent dictatorship would leave people helpless at the end of oil.

Natural economic and political evolution would produce a culture based on small family farms and businesses operating in a free market protected from outside interference by monopoly forces like the oil and mineral industries.

The only solution to these problems is global regulation of monopoly corporate power to facilitate that local economic and political evolution.  That is what the UN and other development agencies ought to pursue.

And every arable region ought to grow their own "apples".  Local business cannot be replaced by global commerce.  In fact local business must be protected from the forces of global monopoly businesses like big oil.

Real competitive capitalism engenders economic and political evolution, monopoly corporatism produces a devolution into global mega-feudalsim.

It is to the benefit of economic and political freedom in each local area to prevent encroachment of corporate monopoly upon any other local region on planet earth, for once the four horsemen start to march, they often march into areas far away from the original scene of conflict created by corporate greed and corruption.

They did that in NYC on 9/11.

We are the bombingest, warringest nation in history, thanks to neo-conservative push for global corporatist empire.

They even want new nuclear bunker buster bombs to play MAD (muttually assured destruction) games with suicide bombers?

And Star Wars to shoot down nukes from terrorists. Meanwhile only 1% of the shipping containers coming into the US are inspected.

It's a topsy-turvy world, lead by this neoconman big lie regime.

"Nuclear power stations using high-grade uranium ores would have to run for seven to 10 years before they created enough power to cancel out the energy required to establish them."

"Wind power takes just three to six months to do the same."

Even if electric power from these respective sources were used exclusively in the process of creating new wind and nuke power installations; electric powered mining, transportation, processing, and construction of wind mills and nuclear power plants, wind still wins.

Wind consumes a fraction of the energy of nukes for construction, maintenance, and has no fuel, coming in at a bottonline cost of 2 cents per kwh and still dropping due to mass production and installation efficiencies.

The current cost of nuclear power is 10 cents per kwh and rapidly rising due to the hidden cost of nuclear waste disposal, storage, and subsequent leaking into the environment.

This analysis leaves out the added greenhouse gas and ozone destroying compounds released during nuclear fuel processing.

"The law requires that the official knowingly identify an officer serving in a covert position. The person who has been briefed on the matter said Mr. Rove neither knew Ms. Wilson's name nor that she was a covert officer."

Oh it is a shame, but maybe he committed perjury in denying calls on the matter to investigators? Grasping at straws (Martha Stewart persecution style) is not justice.

What is the original source of the leak? Was it a battle within the CIA between the Cheney/Rove political implant section and the career people like Valerie Plame?

Yes it was, Valerie and others knew that Cheney was pushing for "stovepiped" intelligence to justify invasion of Iraq. The Cheney faction in the CIA knew that Valerie was Joe's wife, from family get togethers, gossip?

When Joe's trip turned up to embarrass the president, the Cheney faction in the CIA told someone in the Cheney political camp (Scooter?") that Valerie sent her hubby to attack us!! The fight in the CIA was vicious at the time, read that former agent's book.

So Scooter told Nowak, Rove confirmed it. Two sources, top top sources for the douchebag's subsequent piece.

So who's to blame for outing Val? That political appointee CIA Cheney team member responsible.

    The game's afoot Watson!!

Londoners were victims of the Mossad. Period! U.S. and CIA were probably involved. So was the WTC, Spain, Bali, etc, etc. Always consider --- Who did it benefit the most?

Well anonymous, I suppose that's possible, but picking out the Mossad specifically may imply some other conspiracy that I would not choose to emphasize.  I believe the vast majority of Israelies do not support the right wing extreme in their nation.

The extremists on ALL sides of  these ongoing oil wars always benefit from more violence, and we the people of spaceship earth are always the victims.  The ultimate solution is to quit using middle east oil.

That would starve the cancer of war and terror for oily corporatist monopoly empire.  Let those tumors, like hamas, the Saudi "royals", and bushco inc military/industrial oily empire die off from lack of money and influence over the world economy.

I got a dam removal alternative already.

Why are dams useful? They generate electric power, prevent flooding, and save water for times of low rainfall.

Imagine this: A dam beside the river. Let's take the example of the Mississippi.

When flooding occurs, the dam opens up letting the overflow fill vast wetlands beside the river. As the water flows through this dam it turns the blades of water electric generators, they look like windmills, but are mounted underwater. Moving water contains 180 times the power of the equivalent speed and volume of moving air due to water's greater density.

When the water flow is down the dam is opened and water from the wetlands flows into the river, again powering the underwater generators.

The wetlands restore the groundwater levels 100s of miles from the river, that have been depleted by irrigation wells.

Wetlands can be restored even further from the river by using windmills to pump the water further up the river basin.

The aquifer across the farmlands of the midwest are in serious trouble right now. This would solve that problem.

Fish and wildlife could swim right through these dams and around the slow moving blades of these underwater generators.

Awesome news on an awesome blog!!!  Nukes create more warming than even natural gas that emits CO2, a major greenhouse gas.  All due to the energy used in construction, maintenance, and nuclear fuel and waste disposal and storage,  that uses CO2 generating oil and fossil fuels.

I suspected as much.   Plus the heat released to boil water in the reactor is all transferred eventually into the climate.  It's like bringing part of good old sol down to earth.

Nuclear power and it's toxic waste was meant to be 93 million miles from earth, in the sun, where it's safe!

The neoconman argument that only nuclear power can solve global climate disaster is shown to be another  big corporatist lie, like the WMD lie for war in Iraq.

Including the right to medical care and effective, safe, and loving adoption for any children born to mothers who for whatever personal religious or moral convictions choose not to have an abortion and do not have the resources to raise those children themselves.

Our postion sould be that the mother decides, and society backs up her decision either way, caring for any children just as if they were born into a stable loving family.

Or if the mother so chooses, provide safe, legal abortion, morning after pills, and counseling.

Only reproductive rights for women and free and informed choice can stop the devestation  caused by overpopulation.  And only real sex education and access to birth control can secure those rights and inform that choice.

Only 1% of shipping containers coming into the US are actually inspected.

    Our borders are still porous.

No national postive identification (like thumbprint ID) makes faking documents like driver's lisences childs play for terrorists.

The vast percentage of the billions spent on homeland security has been wasted on bushco inc contractor fraud for GOP "donation" scams.

    Cargo planes are unguarded.

In over 50% of the blind tests of airline security with gun, bomb, and knife-like objects screening failed!

Cockpit door replacements are flimsy and one was kicked through by a deranged passenger, only the response of people on that airliner stopped him!

Bushco inc. homeland security is a fraud!!

What's the problem? Remember the memo? "Al Quaeda Determined to Attack Inside The US"? did duuuhbya return from Crawford in 2001 when he got that? Nope.

But he DID return from vacation (on an EMERGENCY basis!)in the case of the feeding tube frenzy, Terry Shiavo (victimized for poltical Rovery) bill.

Homeland Security? For duuhbya it's a joke, another terror incident, another "trifecta". Another chance to rend the US constitution and international law.

    Renewable energy now!!!!

View Article  Electric cars as storage devices for wind and solar electric power on the US power grid.
    Imagine this:

How many hours per day does the average person drive their car? Maybe one hour?

What if the rest of the time your prospective electric car was plugged into the power grid? With 100 million vehicles or so plugged in at any one time... why that would provide all the power storage needed for the entire US.

Smoothing out the wind and solar power generated with the demand for power across the nation.

And with the new quick charge batteries, your car would be ready to drive in 5 to 10 minutes at anytime. Anyone guaranteeing to drive giving say 20 minutes notice would get a discount commensurate with that advantage to the power grid.

The same way someone with a certificate of deposit gets interest on their money, but a checking account, with instant cash access gets less or no interest.

A national renewable energy account? Yep.

Get on this moveon and democrats in congess. We can beat bushco inc's bloody oil warring with energy policy like this!!

It is time for moveon to sponsor positive energy issue ads, instead of merely political attack. Attack is important in rough and tumble politics at times, I'll admit.

But the zen of this kind of energy plan can beat the negative Rovery of this neoconman administration.

For instance: Switch from agri-chem meat that uses 3 pounds of oil to produce one pound of hormone and anti-biotic laden meat...to organic meat purchased from a local farm family business. By cutting the average meat consumption in half the cost will be even a bit less even though organic costs more.
