Conservation Congress:All Wisconsin citizens have the unique opportunity to attend the Conservation Congress meeting in their counties this Monday, April 14, 2008 at 7 p.m. and the Sierra Club should have a presence across the state. The Conservation Congress is unique to Wisconsin, and provides every citizen a voice on important conservation issues. This meeting will ask citizens their input on allowing a hunting season on wolves. If you care about this and other issues important to our natural heritage, attend this meeting and vote. Results of the hearings are not binding, but are forward to the state Natural Resources Board for their consideration in adopting rule changes. You can be sure that wolf-hunt proponents will be out in force. For information contact Kari Lee Zimmerman at 608-266-2952. A news story that ran on local TV here last evening, had dog owners recounting the recent killing of their dog by wolves. This will be an incendiary meeting with this kind of ammunition for the anti-wolf forces.
Mainly dog pack/bear hunters, the most despised of "sportsmen", have been taking the anti-wolf side. Their trucks with portable kennels, boxes for the bear dogs, have sported "No wolves" bumperstickers for years. This should be a fairly hysterical crowd this time around, more hysterical than usual that is.
Every voice and vote defending the recently introduced and recovering wolf population ought to show up, numbers count. Stop the wolf killers!
Here is the official DNR page on problems with wolf depredation.
