Remember the timeless wisdom that HG Wells put into "War of The Worlds"?  Mother Earth was saved by the lowliest of God's creatures, the virus.

It looks like a fly, and a virus, and a greedy corporation all wotked on this potential pandemic.

Read this excellent piece in Grist by Tom Philpot.  For me it ties up the case.   Is the pig, the "filthy animal" that eats it's own waste to blame, or is it the filthy corporate citizen that is to blame.

Pigs are very clean in better circumstances, but in corporate feed lots where human sewage water mixes with pig manure and the pigs injest the mixture the swineflu virus evolves via the fly vector.  Now we have to hope it evolves again into a more benign form.  Successful viruses like the cold virus tend to keep the host healthy enough to move around and spread the disease. Killing the host makes for a limited growth rate in a virus.  Evolution seems to favor us with this catch 22.

But why keep rolling the dice?  Let's just go to biodigestion of the waste stream, clean energy, and local organic agriculture.  Forget multinational corporate ag, there is no reason for it. 

This story is developing, but I'm pretty sure it already proves biodigestion of the waste stream and organic ag is the solution.  It also argues for local agriculture and small business food processing and production, as opposed to multinational corporate chemical hormone antibiotic GHG intensive GMO industrial ag
